Celtic captain Callum McGregor believes the team is making significant strides in the Champions League, learning to handle adversity and adapt to the competition’s immense challenges.
The Hoops’ 1-1 draw with Club Brugge at Celtic Park showcased their growing maturity on the European stage, as they fought back from an early setback to secure a crucial point.
They kept their heads after Carter-Vickers rolled the ball into his own net.
It’s not the first time they’ve fallen behind and coped well in this season’s tournament. Last time out against RB Leipzig, the Hoops came from a goal down to win 3-1.
Reflecting on the match, McGregor said that Celtic have demonstrated progress throughout this campaign.
McGregor hailed that performance as a “perfect storm,” saying: [STV]
“I think the performance level against Leipzig was so high and it was a perfect storm.
“We scored at the right time, atmosphere, everything all came together and what was probably a perfect night performance-wise. You’ve got to carry a bit of luck at this level as well. We scored at the right times and got ourselves back into the game.
“The pleasing aspect again is that even when we’re struggling in the game we can regain control of the game and that’s something that we’ve got a lot better at, especially in the Champions League level where we understand the times we have to suffer because they’re all good teams at this level and they’ve shown that.”
The draw keeps Celtic firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages, a feat they have not achieved since 2013. With an away trip to Dinamo Zagreb next, McGregor and his teammates will look to get back to winning ways
A win would all but confirm Celtic’s place in the knockout round of the competition, playing for a place in the last 16.
Celtic’s ability to adapt and grow will be crucial as they aim to take the next step and secure a spot among Europe’s elite.
