Callum McGregor Defends Young Celtic Duo

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has urged patience and support for defenders Dane Murray and Colby Donovan following their difficult afternoon in Sunday’s 3–1 defeat to Hearts. Update: Brendan Rodgers resigns, Celtic interim and assistant manager appointed. 

Both players were handed starts at Tynecastle due to injuries in the squad, with Murray in particular enduring a game to forget after scoring an own goal and conceding a penalty.

While frustration among supporters has grown after another costly loss, McGregor was quick to defend the inexperienced pair, insisting that the responsibility lies with senior players to help guide them through moments like this.

The captain stressed that mistakes are part of development and that the team must protect their young teammates rather than single them out.

He said: (TCW), “Listen, the young players are exempt from this because they need help as well. When young guys get chucked into the team, it’s the responsibility of the other players to protect them.

“They need time to develop, they need time to get better, they need time to make mistakes. What you don’t get at big clubs is time to make a mistake, to then bounce back. Colby and Dane have done really well and deserve to go into the team.

“It’s up to us to protect them when they’re in there. You don’t leave people on their own.

“I’ve been there as a young player when I’ve made mistakes. You need your senior players around you to pick you back up.”

McGregor’s message is a reminder that growth often comes through setbacks, and that Murray and Donovan are learning in one of the most demanding environments in Scottish football. His defence of the pair also subtly points to the wider issues within the squad, namely a lack of experienced depth caused by injuries and limited recruitment.

While Tynecastle proved a harsh learning experience, McGregor’s comments suggest that the senior players are determined to ensure it becomes a turning point rather than a lasting blow to the confidence of Celtic’s young defenders.

The captain’s support will be crucial as the squad looks to regroup for upcoming fixtures, with Murray and Donovan both likely to remain involved given the current shortage of defensive options.
