Having been a pivotal figure in past European encounters for Celtic, including triumphs against the Italians a few years prior, McGregor is no stranger to the pressure and prestige associated with big European nights.

Tonight’s face-off against Lazio amplifies the stakes, as the teams compete at the pinnacle of European club football, the UEFA Champions League.

Celtic haven’t won at home since 2013, ten years ago, and the captain is aiming to change that in a few hours.

He said: [Celtic TV]

“I think we sit here every year and earmark the home games as the ones you make your mark in the group

“It seems even more important this time around, having lost the first game. If we can get points on the board it gives us a good feeling that we’ve arrived in the competition and we then earmark the other home games to really push in the group.

“That’s the ambition of the club to perform better on the European stage. This is the highest level and we’ve had some decent wins in the Europa League but in this competition, we’re certainly due a big performance and a statement win. Tomorrow night is the next opportunity to do that and the group is full of confidence so why can’t we make it and it would certainly set us on our way.”

After the opening loss, it’s important that Celtic get some points on the board tonight as they eye European football after Christmas.

As the anticipation builds, fans and neutrals alike will eagerly await to see if Celtic, under McGregor’s leadership, can turn this aspiration into reality against Lazio tonight.
