Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that he will not be appealing the red card decision to send Callum McGregor off at the weekend.

After a poor pass from Reo Hatate late in the match, the Celtic captain was forced to pull down Motherwell forward Ross Tierney to prevent a potential goalscoring opportunity.

Some Celtic fans are not convinced that the challenged merited a red card as replays showed that Stephen Welsh was possibly covering.

Postecoglou was questioned after the victory whether the club would be appealing the decision but he said that he needed another look at the foul.

Having had a further look, Celtic have taken the decision not to appeal the red card which the Celtic captain was given.

“No, I had a look at it on the replay and I think it’s fair enough. I said at the time that I thought maybe Welshy had some cover there, but I think it was a fair enough decision,” said Ange Postecoglou quoted by The Glasgow Times.

This will mean that the 29-year old will miss out on Celtic’s trip to McDiarmid Park at the weekend to take on St Johnstone in the early lunchtime kick-off.

The straight red will only be a one match ban with McGregor available for the game the following week at home to Hibs in the league.

Celtic are not short of options in this area with Aaron Mooy, Oliver Abildgaard and Yosuke Ideguchi able to play the defensive midfielder role.

Mooy did not travel to Germany due to picking up something in training yesterday meaning that Abilgaard could be given his first start for the Hoops after making his debut from the bench at the weekend.

The suspension isn’t great but it will mean that McGregor will get be one game less off the sixty odds he tends to play in a season.
