Celtic have been dealt a major injury blow with Brendan Rodgers confirming that Cameron Carter-Vickers could be out for up to five months with an Achilles injury.

The American defender was seen limping at full-time following the 2-1 Europa League win over Sturm Graz, and early indications suggest the problem is a serious one.

Carter-Vickers has been a key figure at the heart of Celtic’s defence since joining the club, and his absence will be a significant setback as the Hoops prepare for a busy period in both domestic and European competition. The 27-year-old has been one of the team’s most consistent performers under Rodgers and is widely regarded as a leader in the dressing room.

The Celtic boss confirmed the extent of the injury when speaking to the media, admitting that the situation “is not great news” for the club but expressing confidence that others in the squad will step up in his absence. Rodgers pointed to Liam Scales as an example of a player who has already taken his chance this season and hinted that this could now be another opportunity for others to impress.

Speaking about the injury blow, Rodgers outlined the latest on Carter-Vickers’ condition and his expectations for the months ahead.

He said: (Sky Sports), “He looks like he’s done his Achilles, which can be anywhere between three and five months. So we’re just awaiting confirmation of that, but it’s not great news. So, but we’ll see where that one goes.

“Cam’s been a very important member of the squad, of course, and been a great centre-half for the club. But what I always think it does is it opens the door and gives an opportunity to someone else.

“That opportunity came to Liam Scales and he’s been brilliant in my time here. And you’ve seen his performance last night. He was so good and it’ll open the door for someone else to come in and look to perform.”

Rodgers’ update will come as a huge concern for supporters, with Carter-Vickers’ influence at the back being one of the cornerstones of Celtic’s success in recent seasons. His leadership, composure, and defensive strength have made him one of the first names on the team sheet since he arrived in Glasgow.

However, the manager’s message was one of resilience rather than panic. Celtic have depth in defence, with Liam Scales, Auston Trusty, and Dane Murray among those who could fill the gap in the coming weeks. Rodgers also made clear that he views this as an opportunity for others to step up and stake their claim for a regular starting spot.

The timing of the injury is far from ideal, coming just before Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash against Hearts at Tynecastle. But Rodgers has been quick to remind his players that the club has overcome similar challenges before and must now show the same mentality again.

While losing Carter-Vickers is a major setback, Rodgers will hope the team’s strong response against Sturm Graz can set the tone for how they handle the weeks and months ahead, by adapting, staying united, and keeping their focus firmly on results.
