Celtic’s reported interest in Camilo Duran has generated plenty of discussion in the past 24 hours, with the 24-year-old Colombian attacker emerging as one of the club’s most intriguing transfer targets.
Much of the focus has centred on negotiations and transfer fees, but one man who knows Duran better than most believes the forward’s greatest asset isn’t his finishing ability—it’s his mentality.
Former Independiente Medellín coach Sebastián Botero has shared a fascinating insight into the player he helped develop, explaining why Duran has consistently overcome setbacks on his journey to European football.
A Player Who Thrives Under Pressure
Botero believes Duran possesses the personality needed to cope with the demands of top-level football, claiming pressure has always brought the best out of him.
“He has always been a bit of a rebel,” Botero said. “Pressure doesn’t weigh him down – it fuels him.”
The former coach explained that Duran has never been intimidated when faced with adversity, instead using difficult situations as motivation to prove people wrong.
That mentality has helped the Colombian continue his rise despite encountering setbacks that might have stalled other players’ careers.
The Position Switch That Changed His Career
Interestingly, Duran wasn’t always viewed as an attacking player.
Botero revealed the Colombian initially arrived at Independiente Medellín as a midfielder before the coaching staff decided his qualities were better suited further up the pitch.
“When he first arrived at the club, he was a midfielder, but we soon turned him into a forward player, where he was far better suited,” Botero explained. [Record Sport]
He also praised Duran’s composure in front of goal, adding: “Camilo has a lot of personality and character. That’s evident in his composure when finishing.”
Football Provided a New Direction
Botero also reflected on Duran’s upbringing, explaining the striker grew up in difficult circumstances before football changed the course of his life.
The former coach admitted Duran could be “very rebellious” as a youngster, attributing much of that to the environment in which he was raised.
However, joining a football academy proved to be a turning point, helping channel his determination into pursuing a professional career.
Duran’s path wasn’t straightforward. A spell with Brazilian giants Flamengo failed to result in a permanent move after injury interrupted his progress, but Botero believes the setback only strengthened his resolve.
Azerbaijan Became the Making of Duran
After rebuilding his career, Duran made the move to Qarabag—a decision Botero believes transformed the striker’s development.
“It was a risk for him going to Azerbaijan,” Botero said. “It has been the making of him and he has matured so much on the pitch.”
Botero believes regular football and European experience have helped Duran develop into a more complete forward, with his performances now attracting attention from clubs across the continent.
“He has improved massively,” Botero added, before suggesting the Colombian can continue progressing and eventually earn “a nice move to a bigger club.”
With Celtic continuing to be linked with the 24-year-old this summer, Botero’s assessment offers an encouraging insight into the mentality and character behind the player Rodgers is reportedly keen to bring to Parkhead.
Whether negotiations ultimately result in a deal remains to be seen, but if Botero’s judgement proves accurate, Celtic could be pursuing a forward whose resilience has been just as important to his development as his ability in front of goal.
