Former Celtic defender Carl Starfelt has spoken about his future at Celta Vigo after being linked with a return to Glasgow last summer.

The Swedish centre-back, who left the Hoops in 2023, has been a key player in Spain, and despite past interest from Celtic, he seems settled in La Liga.

Celtic’s Attempt to Re-Sign Starfelt

According to 67 Hail Hail, Celtic did attempt to bring Starfelt back to Parkhead last summer, but ultimately, they were priced out of a move. The club was in need of defensive reinforcements, and with the Swede’s experience in Scotland, he would have been a logical addition. However, a deal never materialised, and Starfelt remained in Spain.

Starfelt Happy at Celta Vigo

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen, Starfelt has now addressed his current situation, making it clear that he is happy at Celta Vigo and focused on his current club’s European ambitions. “I feel very comfortable at Celta Vigo,” he said. “Then there will always be rumours. But I have a contract for two more years after this season and, as I said, I feel very comfortable.”

Celta are currently pushing for European qualification, and Starfelt admitted that success in that pursuit would make staying even more appealing. “It’s also great that we’re fighting for Europe this year. It would of course be an extra carrot to stay,” he added.

No Talks Over a Move

Despite the speculation, Starfelt insists he has not discussed a potential transfer with his representatives. “I haven’t spoken to my agent about it at all. He obviously knows that I’m enjoying it very much. Then I focus on my football and he’ll take care of the rest.”

While Starfelt’s comments seem to put any immediate return to Celtic to bed, football is unpredictable, and circumstances can change quickly. Celtic’s defensive issues this season have been well-documented in Glasgow Derbies, and should Brendan Rodgers look to strengthen his backline again in the summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Hoops revisit their interest in Starfelt.

  1. This would be a disastrous signing for us! I don’t know who’s worse! Trusty or Starfelt! They are both terrible liabilities!

  2. We go from all these top names coming at transfer time to this nonsense of bringing past players back.
Starfelt Ajer, Kyogo add that to Tierney and Jota who are already back.

Starfelt was not good enough then and is now older and slower. No thanks.
Ajer has not progressed and is older and slower.
Kyogo can go fuck himself. The way he stuck out the door mid season and his illogical excuses for doing so have made him a MoJo figure in my mind.

No let’s get a new young striker.( I would refer you to Botic from the A league.) Could get him for next to nothing.
Let’s get a new defence with big, fast, good in the air centre halves and an enforcer that has been missing since Broonie skipped off to round up sheep.

  3. I totally disagree with both Joe and Don.
Carl Starfelt was a solid defender and always gave his all for the club, he especially raised his game against TheRangers.
As for the other players what’s wrong with bringing tried and trusted quality back to the club? Selling players for whipping fees and getting them back on the cheap is brilliant business on top of strengthening the team.
On the topic of Kyogo he was brilliant for Celtic and can be again. I know he lost his way a bit but let’s face it he is a far better option than Adam Idah, who looks nothing like a £9m player! Personally I’d be looking to move him on in the summer but it would most probably be at a loss! I’d prefer to and be tempted to give Johnny Kenny and/or Daniel Cummings a run in the over the remainder of the season.
Adam Idah helped get Celtic the title and The Scottish Cup last season which was great but he should never have been bought for the money paid we shouldn’t have even gone near £5m.
