Former Celtic Captain, Jackie McNamara dismissed the notion Celtic and Brendan Rodgers were ever in the midst of a ‘crisis’ before heading into the Glasgow Derby a couple of weeks back.

The media was pushing the narrative that Celtic were in disarray while everything was coming up roses in Govan as the pair were set to face off.

In reality, the Ibrox club were worse off than the champions, and a loss at Celtic Park confirmed the worst start to an Ibrox season in 29 years – however, still no crisis down that way.

Speaking at the Irn Bru Cup draw yesterday, McNamara said he never saw the Celtic stuff as a crisis, although they had their troubles it was never on that level.

“I didn’t see things as a crisis,” said McNamara

“A lot was made regarding the disappointment of going out the Champions League to AEK Athens. They have made to the group stages in the last two seasons but over the two games against AEK, Celtic were by far the better side and they had a couple of moments defensively that cost them.

“There was the Moussa Dembele situation hanging over the club as well.

“With a player like Dembele you can only hold on to him for so long before clubs with more finances from abroad or down south come calling. It is difficult to hold on to players like Dembele and there were rumours that he was leaving last January before he picked up his injuries.”

Dembele ended up leaving under less than ideal circumstances for €22million to Lyon.

Even with one of their best players sold two days prior, Celtic outplayed their Glasgow rivals at Celtic Park and put end to any feeling they were ready to give up their mantle as the premier team in Scotland.

Jackie couldn’t help but give the Ibrox club a cheeky dig by declaring Celtic are still way ahead after all the talk.

“In the lead up to the last game it was all about Rangers getting closer and there was a crisis over at Celtic but Brendan’s team did their talking on the park.

“Celtic showed that they are still way ahead.”

After all the bluster, hype and anticipation it was Celtic who did their talking on the pitch.
