With pressure mounting and popularity at an all-time low, the Celtic board appears to be looking for outside help.
The club have posted an advert for a brand new position: Head of Business Operations.
It’s a role that doesn’t currently exist within the club structure, and while it reads like a corporate appointment on paper, there are several lines in the job description that stand out — not least for a fanbase still waiting for basic communication, transparency, and a clear footballing plan.
“The opportunity has arisen to join Celtic in the role of Head of Business Operations,” the posting reads, according to RecordSport. “This role is fundamental to ensuring that supporter services are delivered in a way which ensures world class supporter service is in place.
“It will encompass a broad range of supporter services including the oversight of all retail operations, ticketing, hospitality sales, and stadium services.”
The use of the phrase “world class supporter service” is raising eyebrows and not in a good way. After months of discontent, protests, open letters, and a failed summer transfer window, the idea that Celtic are aiming for world-class delivery off the pitch will strike many fans as detached at best, tone-deaf at worst.
It’s not the first time that phrase has been used by the board, either. Chief Executive Michael Nicholson previously claimed the club strives to be “world class in whatever we do”. It’s a line that’s been recycled without much to back it up in terms of fan experience, squad investment, or transparent leadership. But it’s fine, our changing room has the slogan “World-class basics”.
Whether this new hire is a genuine step towards improving engagement and operations, or simply another layer of corporate gloss, remains to be seen. What’s certain is that this alone won’t be enough to ease supporter unrest, not when there are deeper concerns about football strategy, accountability, and ambition on the pitch.
The board did admit on Monday night that they need to communicate better. Will we eventually be seeing this?
