Journalist Stephen McGowan has given an honest verdict on Celtic’s board after the way they dealt with the summer transfer window.
The lack of new signings, along with the messy end to deadline day, has angered supporters who feel Brendan Rodgers has not been given the players he needs. McGowan said the board’s reply to fan frustration only showed how far removed they are from the mood around Celtic Park.
He said: (The Herald), “In a statement so tone-deaf Prince Andrew could have written it from a Pizza Express in Woking, the men running Celtic have let it be known that an unsatisfactory transfer window really was nothing to do with them.
“Contrition was conspicuous by its absence. Self-awareness? You’d find more of that from Elon Musk wielding a chainsaw.
“No club with the guts of £100m in the bank should spend transfer deadline day scrambling around asking free agents if they fancy a move to Scotland.
“Or blocking the exit of an unsettled Daizen Maeda because they can’t land a replacement.”
McGowan’s remarks echo the frustration felt by many fans, who have questioned how a club with such strong finances can still appear unprepared when the transfer deadline arrives. The sense of missed opportunity has been amplified by a failure to add proven quality for European competition.
The fallout has left Rodgers in a difficult position, with expectations high but resources limited. While he has spoken about the need for more quality, the board’s insistence on sticking to their model has widened the gap between manager and hierarchy.
For the supporters, McGowan’s words sum up their growing anger. They see a board unwilling to adapt, clinging to caution despite holding significant cash reserves.
