Celtic have been urged to show real ambition in the January transfer window, or risk losing manager Brendan Rodgers at the end of the season.
Rodgers is currently in the final year of his contract and, while he has said he’s open to extending his stay, he’s made it clear that certain conditions must be met for him to commit. You’d assume primarily being backed to build a team capable of competing on the Champions League stage.
The summer transfer window was a sore point. Despite the progress he had shown on the top stage last season, Rodgers wasn’t fully backed, and frustrations grew as key positions remained understrength. To add fuel to the fire, the manager was briefed against in the press, leading to an internal row and a claim by Rodgers that the actions were “cowardly.”
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has now weighed in, warning that January will be a pivotal moment for the board.
“Brendan Rodgers and the fans are not satisfied with just dominating domestically. Brendan has always been ambitious. You remember the way that he left Celtic the first time around, and he was criticised for it, but it was a manager who was showing ambition and wanting to manage in the Premier League at what was at the time a top club.”
“He won the FA Cup and wanted to do just what he wants to do with Celtic, compete in the Champions League. So he’s not going to be short of ambition and the only way that this board will be able to keep him long term is to match that ambition.”
“The only way that they will be able to show it, is when the January transfer window comes round. If they don’t do that, then there’s every chance that he won’t be the manager there next season,” he told football betting site talkSPO
Celtic’s board now face a major test. The team is still fighting on multiple fronts, and while domestic success remains crucial, Rodgers has been vocal about his European ambitions. Whether the club matches that ambition in January may well determine if the manager is still in the dugout come next summer.

Nobody will blame BR when he leaves as the board have not only undermined him with the leak to the Sun from PL but refused an investigation to uncover the mole. Our problem lies with the lack of ambition at the top and their only real desire being to keep one step ahead of Rangers. The support deserve so much more but only DD can fix that unless his get up and go has got up and gone.
