Celtic have been linked with a surprise €7million move for former Liverpool youngster Bobby Clark, with The Times journalist Martin Hardy reporting that Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring the 20-year-old to Celtic Park in January.

The story has caught many off guard, as this is the first outlet to report any such development. Still, it’s the kind of rumour that carries enough logic to make supporters stop and think — particularly given Celtic’s need for fresh midfield spark and Rodgers’ track record of targeting technically gifted young players.

Clark, now on loan at Derby County from RB Salzburg, has made ten appearances in the Championship this season. Comfortable both as a central midfielder and further forward in the attacking role, he’s shown flashes of creativity and composure that mark him out as a player with a high ceiling.

A Sensible Link or Speculative Noise?

For all the intrigue, this report should be treated with a touch of caution. Hardy’s piece in The Times stands alone for now, and no other major outlet in Scotland or Austria has backed up the claim that Celtic are actively negotiating for Clark.

That said, the details don’t feel outlandish. A £6million price tag for a 20-year-old with Premier League academy pedigree fits with Celtic’s transfer strategy of investing in young, high-upside talent. Rodgers has repeatedly spoken about adding “quality and creativity” to his squad, and Clark ticks both boxes.

The midfielder came through Liverpool’s academy before joining RB Salzburg in 2024 for around £10million, where he briefly worked under Pepijn Lijnders. Salzburg’s model of trading in young talent makes any potential move plausible, especially if Clark’s long-term fit in Austria remains uncertain.

Celtic’s Early Transfer Intentions

If there’s substance to this story, it would be an encouraging sign that Celtic are already laying the groundwork for January business. The Hoops have often been criticised for slow starts in the transfer market, but a move like this, two months before the window opens, would show real intent from Rodgers and the recruitment team. The Celtic board have already been warned that a slow start in January is not an option.

Celtic’s first match of 2026 is a Glasgow Derby at Celtic Park on January 3, and Rodgers will want any new arrivals ready to hit the ground running. A dynamic, creative midfielder arriving early in the window could make a real difference in that run-in.

For now, though, the Bobby Clark link sits in the “interesting but unconfirmed” category. The deal isn’t impossible, and the fit makes sense, but supporters will be waiting for further verification before getting carried away.

Still, the thought of Celtic moving early to secure a talented young midfielder with Premier League and European experience is an exciting one. If this is a hint of what’s to come in January, the Hoops support might have reason to feel optimistic.

Before the transfer window even opens, Celtic face a gruelling winter schedule with the games coming thick and fast between now and Christmas. They sit two points off the top of the league behind Hearts and have struggled in many of their games this season. On more than one occasion, already, the bhoys have left it late to secure three points. Getting to January in good shape is not something we can take for granted.
