Charlie Mulgrew has praised the return of Alistair Johnston to Celtic training, calling it a major boost for Brendan Rodgers’ side ahead of a busy run of fixtures.
The Canadian international has been out with a hamstring injury but is now back in full training, giving Rodgers another defensive option after several weeks of limited choices in the back line. In his absence, Colby Donovan stepped up and performed well, but Johnston’s experience and energy on the right flank have clearly been missed.
Mulgrew believes Johnston’s influence stretches beyond defense, pointing to his forward play and composure as vital parts of Celtic’s system. Even if the Dundee game comes too soon for a full return, his presence around the squad has lifted confidence.
Mulgrew made clear just how valuable Johnston is to the team and the balance he brings when fit.
He said: (Go Radio Football Show), “Big player. Big, big player. Donovan has come in and done well. He hasn’t done himself any harm.
“But Johnston coming back, he is a huge player. Probably a bit early this weekend, you would imagine. But you never know. Massive.
“We are saying he is a right-back as well. That’s mad to think that, we spoke about it earlier. But his forward runs. The quality he brings on that side really helps, so good to have him back.”
Johnston’s ability to push forward and contribute in attack has been a hallmark of Celtic’s play under Rodgers, and his return could help restore some of the fluency that has been missing in recent weeks.
His energy, tackling, and delivery from wide areas have made him a fan favourite since his arrival from Montreal, and Mulgrew’s praise underlines how important he is to the team’s shape.

With Celtic juggling domestic and European fixtures, having a fully fit Johnston again will give Rodgers both stability at the back and a fresh attacking outlet on the right.
Whether he starts against Dundee or is eased back in, his return marks a timely boost for the Hoops.
