Callum McGregor believes Celtic have the quality and hunger to deliver more silverware this season, despite the anger surrounding the club’s summer transfer business.
The Celtic captain had been one of the players urging the board to strengthen in the window, with key gaps left unfilled and several deals completed late. Supporters have been furious at what they see as a failure to back Brendan Rodgers properly, especially after the club’s Champions League exit.
But McGregor says the mood in training has been positive since the window shut and insists the squad are fully focused on success.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup quarter-final against Partick Thistle, the midfielder said: “I do, actually I do. Having seen the training last week and this week, there’s a real freshness, there’s a real hunger to run and work hard, and then the quality to come with that as well.
“I think they will certainly help us.
“Now the window’s shut, we draw a line under what happened and we all move forward with the one goal of trying to make the club and the team as successful as we can.” [Daily Record]
McGregor’s comments come at a time when Celtic fans are continuing to protest against the board, with a late-entry demonstration planned at Rugby Park last weekend and more action expected in the coming weeks.
On the pitch, though, McGregor is keen to keep momentum going after Celtic’s dramatic 2-1 win at Kilmarnock put them back on top of the Premiership. The trip to Firhill offers another chance to push for silverware, with McGregor confident his teammates are ready to step up.
It also offers the team the opportunity to put in a good performance, something they haven’t really done this season.
