Celtic have spent big on their back-line this summer but are still short on shoring up their defence. Celtic fans will be well aware of who Birger Meling is, the young left-back has come up against Celtic four times in the last few seasons in European football.

The 24-year-old Norwegian who has been capped ten times for his country would be a welcome addition to Celtic Park and dull the loud groans ringing around Paradise the last week.

According to the Evening Times, Celtic are close to signing the left-back. Apparently, Chris Sutton seems to be the source for this transfer been close. Last Tuesday Neil Lennon faced a backlash from fans over not playing his new left-back Bolingoli against Cluj, the Irishman played Callum McGregor as a full-back and it didn’t work.

Lennon has been dealing with the fallout since bringing in Birger might get a few fans off his back.

  1. Meling would be a good signing. He’s an experienced and good quality full back. What annoys me is that Bolingoli is also a very good football player, but he’s clearly an attacking wing back, and expecting him to be able to defend like Tierney in a 442 should never have been an expectation. And splashing out 3m or whatever on him clearly has come with some risk. Martin ONeills 352 system would have suited him but now I fear for Bolis future at the club, which is a real shame for the player. However, at the end of the day, someone like Meling will provide better defensive cover and leave any idiotic notions of playing CalMac at left back firmly off the table. Let’s hope we can get this one over the line.
