Celtic are closing in on a deal for Free Agent Benjamin Siegrist according to reports on Thursday afternoon.

The goalkeeper left Tannadice in the summer with an eye to earning al curative deal elsewhere. While Celtic have been interested in the goalkeeper there was doubt whether Benjamin would come to Celtic knowing he wouldn’t be number one.

However, according to SunSport, Celtic have managed to convince the SPFL goalkeeper to sign for the club and attempt to dislodge Joe Hart.

Siegrist, 30, is a great shot stopper and a very decent back up to Joe Hart. If the Swiss stopper does sign on the dotted line, we’ll likely see him timeshare the role in pre-season to show Ange what he’s capable of.

Vasilis Barkas left on loan earlier in June, Scott Bain is also still at the club, but will the Scottish keeper fall down the pecking order if Benjamin comes in?

As signings go, it’s not earth shattering, or a signal intent but it’s securing Celtic’s foundations.

Remember, there’s still an ongoing pandemic and as we witnessed last season, Scott Bain and Joe Hart were both missing in December paving the way for Barkas to start the St Johnstone away tie.

We need to make sure we’re strong enough to deal with injuries and call-offs.
