The major shake-up behind the scenes at Celtic shows no signs of slowing down following Brendan Rodgers’ departure and Martin O’Neill’s return on an interim basis.
After a series of coaching exits linked to Rodgers’ backroom team, including long-serving assistant John Kennedy, changes are now extending into the youth and academy setup.
According to the Daily Record, Steven Hammell, currently Head of Academy Coaching, is set to take on full control of Celtic’s academy in a restructure expected to be finalised at the end of the season.
The move would see Hammell step into a senior leadership role currently occupied by Chris McCart, who has overseen Celtic’s youth department for more than 20 years. McCart has been instrumental in developing several academy graduates who went on to feature for the first team and beyond.
While Hammell’s promotion will come into effect at the end of the season, no details have been given about McCart’s future or whether he will remain involved in the club’s youth structure in another capacity.
The former Motherwell boss joined Celtic’s academy staff in 2023 and has impressed internally.
With O’Neill and Shaun Maloney steering first-team matters on a temporary basis, it’s clear Celtic’s board are also using this transitional period to reassess the club’s wider football operation, from the first team right down to the academy.
There seems to be a major rebuild happening off the pitch at Celtic just now.
