It was back in the summer when we saw Jonathan Afolabi sit in the stands as the news swirled around Celtic Park the Irishman was in the building and set to sign for the Hoops.

I’m going to be honest, out of all the young players Celtic signed in the summer, I was certain Afolabi was the first one we’d see make the breakthrough or at least get some first team game time in cup competition.

That opportunity went to Jeremie Frimpong and nobody can really argue with the outcome. Neil Lennon seen the lads potential and thought there was no way he could hold the defender back.

For Afolabi and others, it’s been a slow burn and playing in some pretty dull and meaningless fixtures for the developmental side.

From what I was told by some at Southampton, it seemed like the fans and some coaches at the club were very disappointed to see this lad go to Celtic instead of signing a new deal at St Mary’s.

The striker did get an injury on international duty with the Irish under 21s earlier this season which hampered his progress and he’s now looking to make an impression. With Celtic needing reinforcements in attack, could Afolabi provide something different?

If Celtic do bring in a striker this January, which many expect them to do, then you’re hoping it’s a tried and tested finisher. If it’s another punt then why not take a punt on Jonathan, the lad has the size and the ability to succeed.

Neil Lennon will bring the Irishman through when he feels he’s ready but with a Scottish Cup date with Thistle looming on the 18th – It would be great to see Jonathan make the bench.
