KRISTOFFER AJER has given an optimistic timeframe for his return to action after undergoing successful surgery on Thursday.

Ajer suffered a broken eye socket against Livingston in a nasty collision.

The Norweigan has confirmed the seriousness of the surgery with three ‘titanium plates’ needed to fix the broken socket.

However, the young Celtic star is not too downhearted and believes he could make an appearance before the end of this year all going well.

“Everything went well and I can start working out again in a week. All I need to be careful about at first is that I avoid contact exercises.” told SunSport.

“The plan is that I can play football again in four to six weeks. There were three fractures and titanium plates were put in.

“The surgeon operated the tear through the mouth, fixed the fracture over the eye by cutting a bit of the eyebrow.

“Then he had to lower under the eyelid to fix the fracture under the eye. The surgeon was very pleased when I spoke to him afterwards.

“Never before have I looked harder. Finally, I look like a Scottish central defender.”

Starting at Hamilton next week, Celtic have 11 games in under a month spanning three competitions where they could solidify their position atop of the SPFL, qualify for Europe and win the League Cup.

With so many injuries, if Ajer could get back that quick it would be a welcome boost but it seems unlikely the Celtic boss would risk the player’s long term fitness to throw him in before fully recovering.

If Boyata and Benkovic can stay fit, then they are likely to carry the load in defence over the festive period.

There are question marks over who will start at Hamilton when Celtic have to play on another plastic pitch – Benkovic struggles on this surface with a slight calf problem.
