Celtic’s pursuit of Danish striker Mathias Kvistgaarden has taken another twist as Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig have reportedly joined the hunt for the Brøndby star.

According to Danish outlet BOLD, Leipzig have expressed interest in the 22-year-old, who has also attracted attention from Eintracht Frankfurt and long-time admirers Celtic. The report claims Brøndby are open to selling their prized asset in January but would demand a fee of at least £8.5 million.

Leipzig’s involvement adds another layer of complexity to the chase for Kvistgaarden, as the Bundesliga club has a proven track record of attracting and developing young talent.

However, BOLD notes that Leipzig would need to make space in their squad by offloading a current forward before they can push for Kvistgaarden’s signature.

This mirrors Celtic’s situation, with any potential move for the Danish striker likely contingent on the departure of Kyogo Furuhashi. The Japanese international has been linked with several clubs during this transfer window, with Atlanta United cooling their interest but Stade Rennais keen on making a move.

The Hoops have long been linked with Kvistgaarden, with reports emerging a few transfer windows ago.

With Kyogo and Adam Idah currently Rodgers’ only recognised senior strikers, a move for Kvistgaarden would bolster the forward line and reduce Celtic’s reliance on Kyogo, who has carried much of the attacking burden in recent seasons.

Celtic’s main challenge in landing Kvistgaarden lies in competing financially with clubs like Leipzig and Frankfurt. Both Bundesliga sides have significantly larger budgets and can offer the opportunity to play in one of Europe’s top leagues. However, Celtic’s success in Scotland and their regular involvement in European competition, including the Champions League, could prove to be an enticing prospect for the player.

Kvistgaarden has previously hinted at being open to a move away from Brøndby, saying he is ready to move on.
