ODSONNE EDOUARD banging in goals for his country is great news for him but is it good news for Celtic? Maybe for the guy counting the cash but when it comes to Celtic’s onfield fortunes, the more success he has internationally the more problems it creates from a Celtic perspective.
Celtic fans aren’t daft and no Odsonne will be sold by the club one day and you could argue his international exploits will bring a bigger transfer fee when that time comes.
The striker’s ten goals in five games at under 21 level has many people in France talking, so much so, Eddy is likely to be picked for the French under 23 side for the Tokyo Olympics and there lies a big issue that might not be immediate but could be a sore one in six months time.
Edouard has already stated he wants to play in the event when asked about the Olympics.
“It’s a very important competition, one that every sportsman dreams of participating in.” he told SunSport.
“I have waited a long time to be called up by France at this level and I am keen to do well so I make an impression.”
The Olympics runs from July 23 to August 8, 2020 – if Eddy is picked that’s time away before and after the Olympics to prepare and then get a proper rest.
Celtic’s Champions League qualifiers would be in full flow, presuming Celtic retain the league title, and we would be without our star striker.
Something Celtic will need to look at.
