Competition is hard to come by in the SPFL and after the record-breaking season just gone, it was always going to be hard to emulate it.

But how exactly are Celtic doing, matched up against themselves from this time last year?

While the team is still unbeaten there has been a couple more hiccups along the way this time and some players who need to up their game. I know how ludicrous that sounds when you look at Celtic’s overall run but put them up against last season’s Celtic and they’re six points off the pace!

Celtic have drawn three more games dropping those six points. They also had scored 12 more goals BUT they did concede five more. That lays waste to may people saying Celtic’s defence has been in the midst of a crisis after not signing suitable cover in the summer. Nir Bitton proving valuable in the league for sure.

Also, Celtic are going into their last Champions League game with one more point than last season. On matchday five last year the team had 2 points after draw with Monchengladbach and Man City. They would draw with Man City on matchday six to give an overall three points in the group, the tally the club have already going into Tuesday’s showdown with Anderlecht.

I think Celtic fans will take that ALL day. Conceding some ground domestically, if it means getting Europe beyond Christmas then it’s a worthy trade-off.

You sense Celtic really haven’t got properly going this season yet but they’re still finding points and wins and eeking out results. When they do hit full flow they will go further ahead but I don’t think they’ll beat last years points haul.

  1. its impossible to beat last seasons point total now as we only drew 4 games last season the same as this season already.
dont know why but we are struggling to score goals this season, maybe the lack of form from Scott Sinclair has alot to do with it, but im sure we will hit top gear after the winter break and start to blow all the teams away again.

  2. Your article hints at what is happening but does not say it. Celtic have been quite poor domestically so far. Only the game at Aberdeen was any where near the standard of last year. Scoring 12 goals less, almost a goal a game indicates that teams are better equipped to play against us. Celtic are a little jaded, tired and predictable. The club needs to be freshened up a bit. Even successful teams need this regularly. Stein did it with the Lisbon Lions, starting almost immediately and Rodgers needs to start doing it in January. Some 1st teamers need to be dropped, due to form and fatigue, starting with Armstrong and Sinclair who have both been brutal this season. To be honest, I would punt both of them in January. Armstrong has one eye on the EPL and Sinclair appears to be doing exactly the same as he has done throughout his career. Excellent performances followed by a big move and then a slump resulting in him falling away. This is why he ended up at Chelsea and Man City, and even Villa, and why he never made the grade at any of them. We have seen the best of him and he may never reach the heights of last season again. Get the feelers out and see if someone will bite for 5 million in England. I doubt they will as he has a poor reputation down there. But I bit of freshness is needed. Getting this unbeaten run of our back may be a good thing as this seems to be a priority therefore mentally as a game goes on the team seem to be focused on not getting beat. Need to get back to winning. Sevco will beat Aberdeen tomorrow and are not that far behind plus beating Aberdeen into second will be a huge boost to them and may actually see McInnes leave for Ibrox next week, meaning they will be more confident in the coming weeks. Celtic need to ensure that there is not undue pressure through our own complacency.
