Celtic fans have been accused of ‘smoking weed’ in the stands at a Women’s Champions League match last week.

The Ghirls made history when they took to the field in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their existence, lining up against FC Twente on matchday one of Group B.

Despite a valiant performance against the Dutch side, Elena Sadiku’s team lost by two goals to nil.

Traditionally, when foreign sides visit Celtic in European competition, they are taken away by the electric atmosphere the raucous supporters create.

While that was the case last Tuesday, Twente captain Danique van Ginkel was equally surprised by the apparent smell of weed coming from the home fans.

Rather surprisingly, the 23-year-old revealed after the match that she and her teammates could sniff the scent of ‘wacky-backy’ in the air.

“I have never experienced an atmosphere like that – there was so much cheering,” she said (Glasgow Times).

“But there was a downside – the fans were smoking weed.

“Everyone could smell it. You don’t normally smell that on the pitch.

“But we could still play football with it – the headache wasn’t too bad.”

The smell must not have been that bad because it wasn’t mentioned in the UEFA match delegate’s report on the game.

It didn’t affect Twente’s players, either, who went on to secure a victory.

Perhaps Celtic fans were taking inspiration from the club’s famous supporter Snoop Dogg with their antics.

The American rapper is known for his smoking some questionable substances, a few of which were in the air at New Douglas Park last week.
