Stuart Armstrong has his best game for Celtic at the weekend. For the 90 minutes against Motherwell he became the box to box midfielder that Brendan Rodgers has been trying to sign.

He tracked back, his work rate was through the roof and he even got on the score sheet. A top performance from a player who splits the Celtic support. Since bursting onto the scene from Dundee Utd a couple of seasons back, the player has struggled. Mostly because he was played out of position by Ronny Deila but in general his form has not been up to scratch overall.

In games so far this season I’ve heard him be called the blonde Cafu as well as a complete and utter imposter by the angry gentleman who sits behind me at Celtic Park. Taking the latter comments with a pinch of salt as the same guy denounced Dembele after two games earlier this season.

Armstrong has the ability and the drive to be a success at Celtic Park but with the window opening up soon the player needs more performances like Saturday’s in order to convince Brendan Rodgers he can be trusted in the role.

In my humble opinion, I think the player needs a mean streak. The midfielder certainly showed signs of having one at Fir Park. Someone who is level headed but when he needs to switch it up a gear he can. We’re used to seeing Broony going about his business in that fashion. He can be calm and composed but when we don’t have the ball he’s like a pitbull trying to get it back.

One tackle in particular by Armstong on Saturday had me off my seat, cheering as if it were a goal. The player ran and stretched to dispossess the opposition and even brought the ball under control. We need to see more of this on a regular basis! I can see the fans still being split over the players ability and presence in the starting XI. What it for sure is the player is improving.
