Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is quickly proving his worth at Celtic, stepping up with big moments when it matters most.
The midfielder announced himself in style back in February, firing a stunning stoppage-time winner against Livingston on his debut to keep Celtic’s title hopes alive.
And he done it again.
His 15th-minute strike against St Mirren on Saturday proved decisive, with Celtic edging a tense contest 1-0 to stay in the hunt.
It hasn’t been instant.
Oxlade-Chamberlain needed time to get up to speed after arriving, but the quality is now clear to see.
Teammate Anthony Ralston was full of praise.
He said: “The finish speaks for itself. His quality is terrific. That ended up being the difference in the game.
“Alex is very professional and works hard every day. He’s come in and fitted in brilliantly and he gives us that quality in the final third.
“He’s a top guy away from the game, you wouldn’t think he’s had the career he’s had by the way he acts around the training complex and in general around the boys.
“He’s been great for us. For sure he can be a difference maker for us — he’s certainly one of them.
“He has the talent and it’s about bringing it all together. Throughout the squad we have talent, experience and a good attitude so it’s about bringing all of that together for the run-in now and I’m confident that’s what we will be able to do.” [The Herald]
In a season where consistency has been hard to find, Oxlade-Chamberlain is emerging as a player Celtic can count on in big moments. And with the title race going down to the wire, that could be priceless.
But, Martin O’Neill does have a big decision on his hands. With Arne Engels back fit, someone has to drop out of that midfield for him. Nygren is scoring the goals, despite not impressing every week and the Ox seems to be coming onto a game.
