Celtic fans have been handed a timely boost ahead of a massive November, with Canada boss Jesse Marsch revealing that Alistair Johnston has already returned to light training.
The right-back has been sidelined since August after suffering a hamstring injury during Celtic’s Champions League qualifier against Kairat Almaty. Brendan Rodgers confirmed at the time that Johnston faced around 12 weeks out, but the latest update suggests he might be ahead of schedule.
Speaking to SunSport, Marsch said:
“Alistair is already starting to get on the pitch and do some individual work. And that should bode well for him potentially making an early return and being available for our games in November.”
That timeline could prove significant for Celtic. The club’s League Cup semi-final against Rangers is set for early November, and with Johnston’s recovery progressing well, there’s growing optimism he could be back in contention for that match.

Whether it comes just a little too soon remains to be seen, but even the prospect of a November return is a big lift for Brendan Rodgers. The Canadian has been one of Celtic’s most consistent performers since arriving at Parkhead, combining defensive discipline with relentless energy down the right flank.
In Johnston’s absence, academy prospect Colby Donovan has stepped up impressively, while Tony Ralston has battled through his own fitness challenges. But neither can quite match Johnston’s blend of leadership, aggression, and experience, qualities that have been sorely missed during Celtic’s recent dip in form.

If Johnston can return in time for the derby or shortly after, it would provide a huge boost heading into the busy festive schedule. With domestic and European fixtures piling up, his presence could steady a defence that’s lacked rhythm and depth in recent weeks.
Rodgers won’t rush him, but for the first time since that painful night in Kazakhstan, there’s genuine light at the end of the tunnel for one of Celtic’s most dependable players.
