Alistair Johnston was back out on the training pitch at Lennoxtown this morning, offering a timely boost as Celtic prepare for the final stretch of the season.

The right-back had been dealing with a setback picked up while away on international duty with Canada. He didn’t feature during the break, although he remained with the squad and continued to train as he worked his way back.

That absence raised questions heading into a busy run of fixtures. With six league games left and a Scottish Cup semi-final on the horizon, Celtic need consistency in key areas of the team. Johnston has been a regular when fit, both for his defensive work and his role in pushing the team forward from full-back.

His return to training suggests progress. It doesn’t guarantee immediate involvement, but it puts him back in the frame at a point where options matter. Rotation becomes part of the picture when games come quickly, and having a player like Johnston available again gives Martin O’Neill more flexibility.

That’s even more relevant given the current situation in the squad. Alistair Johnston’s return comes alongside Julian Araujo working his way back. There has also been another injury concern with Donovan, adding to the pressure on defensive options at a key stage of the season.

Celtic have had to deal with changes at the back across the season. Injuries and form have meant adjustments, with partnerships shifting and roles adapting depending on who is available. That has had an impact at times, particularly in games where control has been lost late on.

Johnston’s presence helps steady things. He offers energy down the right and is quick to react when the game turns. In tight matches, that can be the difference.

The timing matters. With the split approaching and no room for dropped points, having Johnston back involved could make a real difference as Celtic push through the final weeks.
