Julian Araujo’s absence continues to leave a gap on the right side of Celtic’s defence, and there’s still no immediate return in sight. The Mexican full-back has been out for a number of weeks, and the team have had to adjust without him.

In his place, Celtic have relied on Colby Donovan. That’s brought mixed results. The role demands both defensive awareness and the ability to support attacks, especially in games where Celtic dominate the ball.

Araujo’s injury has meant a break in that balance. Without a natural fit in the position, it has affected how the team builds down that side and how quickly they can recover when possession turns over.

Martin O’Neill has now provided an update, confirming the defender is still away from the squad as he continues his recovery.

He said: (Daily Record), “The problems before the break are probably still there. Julian is still recuperating down at Bournemouth.

“I do yeah (think he will return this season). He’s doing fine and recovering.

“The physios are obviously keeping in touch with Bournemouth but we expect to see him back in the not-so-distant future.”

The update suggests progress, but not enough yet for a return to action. Araujo remains under the care of his parent club, which adds another layer to the process.

For now, Celtic will continue with the options available. Donovan has stepped in, while others have filled the role when needed. It’s not ideal, but it’s what the squad has had to deal with.

The key will be getting Araujo back for the final stretch. His presence offers a more natural balance to the side, particularly in games where width and recovery pace matter.

Until then, it’s about managing the position and getting through each game without further disruption.
