Julian Araujo’s future remains unclear heading into the summer despite Celtic exploring ways to keep the defender in Glasgow beyond the end of his short spell at the club.
According to the Daily Record, Celtic were interested in discussing another loan deal with Bournemouth and had also looked at whether a permanent move could become possible. The Mexican international returned to the Premier League side after injury cut short his time at Parkhead during the closing months of the season.
Even with the limited appearances, Araujo left a positive impression.
Celtic lacked pace and directness from full-back positions at times last season, especially whenever Alistair Johnston was unavailable or carrying knocks. Araujo brought a completely different energy down the right side. He attacked space aggressively, recovered ground quickly and looked comfortable playing high up the pitch.
That suited the way Martin O’Neill wanted Celtic to play during the title run-in. The team became more front-footed again and Araujo’s athleticism fitted naturally into that approach.
The injury frustration makes the situation difficult to judge fully. Celtic never really got a long enough look at him across consecutive matches. Just as he started settling into the side physically, the season stalled for him.
Bournemouth also appear undecided about the next step. Reports suggest both the player and the Premier League club are weighing up options before pre-season begins. Araujo is expected to be involved with Mexico at the World Cup and strong performances there could quickly change the picture around his market value and future destination.
Interest from clubs in Mexico is also understood to be growing.
For Celtic, much may depend on squad planning around Johnston as well. The Canadian remains first-choice right-back when fit, but the season showed the drop-off in natural attacking width whenever he missed games.
Araujo helped solve some of that problem quickly. Supporters responded to his aggressive style because it felt direct and modern in a squad that occasionally lacked speed in wide areas.
The challenge now is availability. Celtic clearly saw enough ability to explore keeping him longer, but committing heavily to another deal becomes more complicated when fitness interruptions continue following him from club to club.
