Motherwell have officially confirmed that manager Jens Berthel Askou is leaving the club to join Ligue 1 side Toulouse.

The Dane departs Fir Park after an outstanding first season in Scottish football, having guided Motherwell to a fourth-place finish and secured European football for next campaign.

Askou also earned widespread praise for the style of football his side produced throughout the year, with several Motherwell players earning recognition across the division after an impressive campaign.

Interest in the 43-year-old had been building for some time.

Reports from France earlier this week revealed Toulouse had made an official approach, with Askou part of a managerial shortlist alongside Christophe Pélissier and Olivier Pantaloni.

It has now been confirmed he will make the move to France and test himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Celtic had also been loosely linked with Askou during their search for a permanent successor to Martin O’Neill, although no formal approach from the Scottish champions was ever publicly reported.

However, CeltsAreHere understands there was interest from Askou’s side regarding the possibility of the role at Celtic Park.

Ultimately though, talks with Toulouse had been progressing behind the scenes for over a week and the Ligue 1 club have now won the race for his signature.

Askou leaves Scottish football with his reputation massively enhanced after transforming Motherwell into one of the Premiership’s most organised and entertaining sides in a remarkably short period of time.
