Celtic January Target Closing In On Premier League Move

Aurèle Amenda could be heading for England just months after Celtic were linked with a January move for the Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported on X that Coventry City are now in advanced talks with Frankfurt over an immediate deal for the 22-year-old Swiss defender.

For Celtic supporters, Amenda’s name will ring a bell from the winter window. The Hoops were linked with him in January when they were looking at centre-back options and there was talk of a possible loan move from Frankfurt.

At that stage, the move made sense. Amenda was not getting the kind of minutes he would have wanted in Germany, and Celtic needed more depth at the back. A loan deal would have allowed the club to bring in a young defender with a strong profile without committing to a permanent fee straight away.

That deal never came off. Frankfurt kept him, and Amenda later worked his way into their side more often during the second half of the season.

Coventry can offer him a route into the Premier League, which is clearly a major part of the player’s thinking. If he wants England, and Frankfurt are ready to sell, Celtic would be trying to force their way into a deal that already looks quite far along.

There is no suggestion at this stage that Celtic have returned for Amenda. This is more about a former target moving closer to another club.

It still shows why he was on the radar in January. Amenda is young, tall, and has already played at a good level in Switzerland and Germany. Celtic needed that type of defender then.

But unless talks with Coventry break down, this looks like one that has moved away from Celtic. The January loan chance has gone, and Coventry now appear to be the club pushing hardest for a permanent deal.
