Celtic B will remain in the Lowland League next season despite growing speculation throughout the campaign that the club could withdraw from the setup.
Questions over the future of the B team have lingered for months amid wider debate surrounding whether the Lowland League is genuinely helping Celtic’s top young prospects develop towards first-team football.
The B side, originally formed in 2021, endured another fairly uneventful season and ultimately finished comfortably mid-table.
But the broader issue has always gone beyond results.
Celtic’s presence in the Lowland League has never fully sat comfortably within sections of the Scottish pyramid, while the pathway from Lowland League football into Celtic’s first team remains extremely limited.
That has increasingly led to suggestions the club may eventually shift more aggressively towards the loan system instead.
There were even reports earlier this season hinting Celtic were considering pulling the B team out entirely as part of a rethink at Lennoxtown.
The argument has become harder to ignore.
While the B team structure offers control over development, players are often operating at a level still far removed from the demands of first-team football at Celtic.
Meanwhile, the loan route has recently started producing more encouraging signs.
Ayr United in particular have become an increasingly important development partner for Celtic prospects.
Players including Kyle Ure, Francis Turley and Jude Bonnar all gained regular Championship minutes at Somerset Park this season.
That environment offers something very different to the Lowland League – more physicality, greater pressure and football much closer to the standard required if players are to eventually contribute at Celtic Park.
Still, despite the speculation, Celtic are staying in the Lowland League setup for now.
After Monday’s AGM at Celtic Park, fellow member club Cowdenbeath confirmed Celtic B will continue as a guest club for the 2026/27 campaign.
In a detailed summary from the meeting, Cowdenbeath stated:
“The Lowland League West Division will actually have 17 clubs in 2026/27 as Celtic B will continue as a Guest Club.
“Hearts B will not take part in the Lowland League next season.”
The AGM also confirmed major structural changes to the competition moving forward.
The Lowland League will now expand from 16 to 32 clubs and split into two regional divisions – Lowland League East and Lowland League West.
That restructuring perhaps gives Celtic another season to properly assess whether remaining in the setup still provides enough value long-term compared to expanding the loan pathway further.
