Barry Hepburn’s career has taken quite the turn with the former Celtic and Bayern Munich winger now signing for a club in the fourth tier of Australian football.
The 21-year-old has joined Manningham United, bringing to an end an 18-month spell without a club after his contract with Bayern Munich was terminated in 2024.
This latest move comes a long way from what once felt like a dream trajectory.
As a 16-year-old from Bannockburn, his switch from Celtic to Bayern Munich was seen as a major statement of intent. He followed a path that very few Scottish youngsters ever take, trading Lennoxtown for the bright lights of Bavaria and one of the biggest clubs in world football.
The reality, however, was always going to be harsh. Breaking into a Bayern first-team squad stacked with elite talent such as Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman was an enormous task. Opportunities were limited, and after time in the youth and reserve set-up, Bayern ultimately chose to part ways with the winger.
Hepburn was not alone in making the bold move from Celtic to Germany. Liam Morrison also left Glasgow for Bayern Munich, although his career path has since diverged. Morrison is now back in Scotland and currently on loan at Aberdeen.
After a prolonged period without a club, simply getting back on the pitch and playing regular football will be the immediate priority for Hepburn; getting to live down under is a bonus too. At 21, there is still time for his career to reset, even if it now looks very different from what once seemed inevitable.
