Benjamin Nygren’s future is becoming one of Celtic’s biggest summer talking points.
The midfielder enjoyed a sensational debut campaign at Parkhead in terms of numbers and, with the World Cup now underway, there is growing speculation that strong performances on the biggest stage could attract even more attention from clubs across Europe.
Nygren got his tournament underway in the early hours of Monday morning as Sweden defeated Tunisia 5-1 in a dominant display.
The Celtic midfielder started the match in the number 10 role, operating behind the strike partnership of Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak.
He played 64 minutes before being withdrawn with Sweden already 3-1 ahead and firmly in control.
It was another encouraging outing for a player whose stock continues to rise.
After scoring 21 goals during his first season at Celtic and playing a key role in Martin O’Neill’s double-winning side, Nygren has already been linked with clubs from England and across Europe.
The midfielder himself recently refused to rule out a move when asked about his future while on international duty.
Now one of Sweden’s greatest players has weighed in.
Former Sweden star Thomas Brolin believes Nygren would benefit from remaining at Celtic for at least a little longer.
Speaking to Hajper, Brolin said:
“What is best for Benjamin Nygren? I have no idea.
“He has had a fantastic development curve at Celtic and it is probably fantastic to stay there and continue that development curve until the next step when he is ready.
“Whether that is this year or next year or whatever, I actually don’t know.
“But, his curve has been very positive, so then it can be good to stay in the same place for a while longer too.”
While Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels appear increasingly likely to move on this summer, losing another midfield starter as well would be another major blow to Martin O’Neill’s plans.
The Swedish international has quickly become one of the most influential players in the squad and still appears to have significant room for improvement.
Of course, football rarely waits.
A strong World Cup campaign could rapidly increase interest and force Celtic into difficult decisions.
I wouldn’t advise anyone to stay at Celtic with the present board and the Desmond’s still in place.
