Benjamin Nygren has refused to fully commit his Celtic future after Sweden’s World Cup exit.
The Celtic attacker was speaking to Göteborgs-Posten after Sweden were knocked out of the competition, with Nygren now expected to remain in the United States for a little longer before taking a holiday with his girlfriend.
Asked if he is staying at Celtic, Nygren replied: “We’ll see.”
It was a short answer, but one that will naturally catch attention. Nygren has just finished a strong first season in Glasgow and has now had the added profile of being involved at a World Cup with Sweden.
The follow-up question was whether he wanted to continue at Celtic. Nygren’s response did not amount to a transfer request, but it did make clear that he still has ambitions beyond his current situation.
“I have my dreams and goals that I fight for every day and that I have done since I was young,” Nygren said.
“I still have them and that is to play at the highest possible level.
“But when that happens, I can’t answer right now.”
That is where the situation sits. Nygren is not saying he wants to leave Celtic this summer, but he is also not shutting the door on the idea of a future move if the right opportunity arrives.
Celtic supporters will understand the ambition. Players at the club often see Glasgow as a place to win trophies, play European football and build towards the next step. The issue for Celtic is timing. After a productive debut season, losing Nygren now would be a major blow unless the club were given a fee that made the decision unavoidable.
His comments come at a time when Celtic already need movement in the transfer market. The squad is back in pre-season, supporters are still waiting for new signings, and there are several key futures to sort out before the window closes.
Nygren’s answer was not dramatic, but it was not nothing either.
