Callum Wilson is once again emerging as a potential option for Celtic as the summer transfer window gathers pace.
The experienced striker was a player Celtic showed interest in during the January window as they searched for attacking reinforcements following the departure of Kyogo and Idah, with the summer window failing to provide a decent enough striker.
A move never materialised at the time, but circumstances have changed significantly since then.
Wilson now looks set to leave West Ham United following their relegation to the Championship and will be available on a free transfer this summer.
The 34-year-old brings an impressive pedigree.
Across spells with Bournemouth, Newcastle United and West Ham, Wilson has scored 95 Premier League goals in 271 appearances.
Even during West Ham’s difficult campaign last season, he managed seven goals despite the club’s struggles.
Interest is already beginning to emerge.
Hull City are reportedly monitoring the situation as they prepare for life back in the Premier League after promotion.
However, former Northern Ireland international Iain Dowie believes Celtic could be an attractive destination.
Speaking about Wilson’s future, Dowie said:
“I think Celtic would interest Callum Wilson.
“Hull would be an interesting one, and Celtic is a massive club.
“It wouldn’t surprise me.
“He did his job at West Ham in the time he played, and I think there are still goals in him.” [Betano Casino]
Wilson would arrive with vast experience, proven goalscoring credentials and no transfer fee attached. He could be a good addition to the dressing room.
The concern, however, would be his age and injury record.
Celtic are already weighing up decisions on the futures of Kelechi Iheanacho and other attacking options, while Martin O’Neill is expected to prioritise signing a striker capable of leading the line both domestically and in Europe.
Whether Wilson fits that profile is another debate entirely.
What is clear is that Celtic’s need for attacking reinforcements has not disappeared, particularly with Daizen Maeda expected to attract significant interest this summer and look for a move away.
Wilson may not be the long-term solution many supporters crave, but as a free agent with nearly 100 Premier League goals to his name, he is a name that will likely be floated.
