Martin O’Neill has offered an update on Cameron Carter-Vickers after the defender was spotted back training with the Celtic squad on Friday.
The centre-back has been out since October with an Achilles injury, a setback that forced changes across the back line. In his absence, Celtic have had to reshuffle, with players stepping into the right-sided role to cover.

Recent training footage showed Carter-Vickers back involved with the group, not just working individually. That raised questions about whether a return before the end of the season could be possible.
Carter-Vickers brings control in one-on-one situations and helps Celtic hold a higher line. Without him, the balance has shifted, especially when dealing with teams that look to break quickly.
O’Neill was asked about his progress and where he stands ahead of the weekend.
He said: (Sky Sports), “Carter-Vickers has joined in today, but I think that’s a bit of a distance off at this minute, particularly considering the injury he’s had.
“But knowing him, he’d want to play Sunday. He’d throw himself out there.”
The update keeps expectations in check. Training with the squad is one step, but match fitness is another.
An Achilles injury needs careful handling. Sharp movements, sudden stops, and physical contact all place strain on that area. That is where the real test comes.
Celtic have managed without him for months, even if it has required adjustments. Bringing him back too early risks undoing that progress.

There is also the wider picture. With only a handful of games left, the focus is on having him ready for pre-season rather than forcing a return now.
His presence on the training pitch is a positive. It shows the recovery is moving forward. The next stage is making sure he can handle full intensity without any setbacks.
