Chris Sutton Brands Former Celtic Managerial Target “Embarrassing”

Chris Sutton has launched a scathing attack on Roberto Martínez following Portugal’s World Cup exit.

Martínez watched on as Portugal were beaten by Spain, with the defeat sending the Spaniards through to the quarter-finals and bringing another disappointing major tournament to an end for Cristiano Ronaldo’s side.

The former Belgium boss, who had previously been linked with the Celtic job before Martin O’Neill’s appointment, came under fierce criticism for his handling of the game.

Sutton was particularly frustrated by Martínez’s reluctance to make changes as Portugal chased an equaliser.

One decision stood out above all others.

Gonçalo Ramos, who had scored the winning goal against Croatia earlier in the tournament, remained on the bench throughout the match despite Portugal desperately needing a goal.

Instead, Ronaldo played the full game once again. The Saudi league player was so selfish throughout the match, and any promising move broke down with him.

Sutton believes the veteran forward’s influence over the national team is preventing Portugal from making the difficult decisions needed to compete at the highest level.

Posting on X after the final whistle, Sutton did not hold back.

“Roberto Martinez is an embarrassment. Gonçalo Ramos stays on the bench. Ronaldo does what he wants… again! Portugal were a freak show… a circus. Martinez so weak.”

It was a damning assessment from the former Celtic striker.

Questions have regularly been asked about Martínez’s willingness to build Portugal around Ronaldo despite the forward now being well into the latter stages of his career. And it could well cost the gaffer his job.
