Celtic Hold Talks With Borussia Dortmund Winger

Celtic have reportedly opened talks over a possible move for Borussia Dortmund winger Cole Campbell.

The 20-year-old is facing an uncertain future in Germany after struggling to break into Dortmund’s first-team plans, and reports from Sky Germany suggest Celtic are now among the clubs showing interest.

Campbell spent the second half of last season on loan at Hoffenheim, but the move did not develop as hoped. He made just five appearances and failed to register a goal or assist during his short spell with the Bundesliga side.

Hoffenheim had the option to make the deal permanent for around €7.5 million, but chose not to activate it.

That decision has left Dortmund with a call to make on the winger’s future.

Campbell is not believed to be part of Niko Kovač’s plans moving forward, and Dortmund are said to be open to moving him on this summer if the right opportunity arrives.

For Celtic, the link is an interesting one.

The Hoops are expected to look at wide options during the window, with the squad needing more depth, pace and end product in the final third. Campbell would fit the profile of a younger attacking player with room to develop, rather than a finished product.

His senior career has yet to properly take off, but his youth record shows why clubs have kept an eye on him.

During the 2023/24 season, Campbell produced eight goals and 10 assists in 22 matches at Under-19 Bundesliga West level. That form helped build his reputation as one of Dortmund’s more promising attacking prospects.

Now, though, he appears to be at a crossroads.

At 20, Campbell needs regular senior football. Staying at Dortmund without a clear pathway into the first team would do little for his development, while another loan may not be the preferred outcome if the German club are ready to cash in.

Celtic have had success in the past when moving early for young players who need a platform, and Campbell could fall into that category.

There is still a long way to go before this becomes anything more concrete. Initial talks do not mean a deal is close, and Celtic are likely to be assessing several attacking targets at the same time.

But if Dortmund are willing to sell and Campbell is open to the move, this could be one to watch as the summer window develops.

For now, the reported interest points to Celtic exploring another young forward option as they look to shape the squad for the season ahead.
