Craig Bellamy’s name continues to surface whenever Celtic’s managerial future is discussed, but fresh comments from Sky Sports reporter Geraint Hughes suggest the Wales boss remains firmly focused on his current job.
Bellamy has been linked with the Celtic position on more than one occasion since Brendan Rodgers left the club in October. His connection to Celtic, where he spent a spell under Martin O’Neill during his playing career, has made him a natural name for supporters and pundits to mention whenever a vacancy appears.
The former forward has built a strong reputation since moving into coaching. His work with Wales has attracted attention across British football, and that has inevitably led to speculation about a return to club management at some stage.
For Celtic, the attraction is easy to understand. Bellamy is viewed as a coach with clear ideas and the personality to handle the pressure that comes with managing a club expected to challenge for trophies every season.
Yet the latest information points in a different direction.
Hughes has spoken directly with Bellamy and says the Welshman’s focus remains on the national team, despite the interest that has followed him in recent months.
He said: (Sky Sports News), “I had a really good catch up with him very recently. He’s been very aware about the interest in him from club management. He sees that very much in his future but not in his immediate future.
“He is 100 per cent staying with Wales. When Scott Parker lost his job at Burnley he (Bellamy) was immediately the frontrunner for that job. He’s been linked with Celtic, first in November and again now. But Bellamy wants to stay with Wales. He doesn’t see the job he is doing as complete. He is absolutely gutted that they are not at the World Cup.”
Wales missed out on the World Cup, but Bellamy still feels there is work left to do with the national side. With Euro 2028 on the horizon and set to be hosted across the UK and Ireland, the Welshman appears keen to be the man leading Wales into the tournament.
He sees himself managing a club again one day. Right now, though, his attention remains on Wales.
