Daizen Maeda has dropped a major hint regarding his Celtic future.
The forward has come alive during this season-defining run, netting seven goals in his last five matches in all competitions.
That includes his stunning overhead kick against Rangers in a match where he bagged two.
While he hasn’t hit the heights of last season, where he scored 33 goals in 51 appearances to clinch the POTY award, he has knuckled down to deliver when it matters most during this campaign.
Maeda almost departed last summer for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, but a move broke down. While form over the season showed he may have been distracted, he has had a resurgence of energy in what could be his final season at Celtic.
The 28-year-old has now hinted at his future ambitions in Japanese outlet FootballZone, saying:
“I want to take the next step and play in the Premier League, which has always been my goal. Right now, I’m grateful to Celtic and I’m giving it my all.
“But I haven’t seen my limits yet. The Premier League is a dream I’ve been talking about since I was a kid. Even if it’s just for one year, I want to prove just how far my speed can take me at the highest level in the world.
“Staying injury-free and continuing to deliver results. If I can do that, the door to the Premier League and a World Cup run beyond the quarterfinals will surely come into view.
“I just keep running, believing in that. In the end, I think it’s best not to overthink things. I focus 100% on soccer when I’m on the pitch. But when I get home, I pick up my kids from school or give them a bath. That switch is just right for me right now.
“I’m different from the sharp-edged player I used to be—I believe I’m at my strongest right now.”
The forward has achieved it all in Glasgow. Countless big moments, an energy like never seen before, and a desire to give his all until the very end.
He was brought to the Hoops in 2022 by Ange Postecoglou and has since cemented his Celtic legacy.
Four league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups to his name. 77 goals and 38 assists in 210 overall appearances for the club speak for itself.
Maeda has the opportunity to sign off his Celtic career in style. A title-deciding clash with Hearts tomorrow, followed by a Scottish Cup Final against Dunfermline, awaits.
He would depart with the well-wishes of the Celtic support if he decides that now is the time to leave.
He will know where the focus lies for now. Anything after that is yet to be decided. If anything, this should give him further motivation to leave on the best terms possible.
