Timing is everything in football.

No sooner had Celtic finally confirmed that Martin O’Neill would remain in charge for at least another season than reports emerged suggesting Danny Röhl was preparing to move on. He’s away to RB Salzburg and is ‘set’ to leave Rangers after less than a season in the dugout. [The Times]

Röhl’s record against O’Neill last season hardly makes pleasant reading for those of the blue persuasion.

The German came up against Celtic managed by O’Neill four times and failed to win a single one.

There was the League Cup semi-final defeat after extra time. Then came the 2-2 league draw where Celtic fought back from two goals down. A Scottish Cup exit on penalties followed before O’Neill’s side wrapped things up with a 3-1 victory at Celtic Park.

Perhaps Röhl simply decided he’d had enough.

His departure does leave Hearts facing the prospect of losing their manager after a season that promised so much but ultimately ended in disappointment.

For long spells, it looked like the Edinburgh side were heading towards one of the most remarkable title wins in modern Scottish football.

Instead, Celtic surged past them in the closing weeks before sealing the championship on the final day.

Reports continue to suggest Rangers are interested in appointing Derek McInnes, the man whose Hearts side allowed Celtic back into the title race during a difficult run-in. [Sky Sports]

Hearts won just one of their final seven away league matches. That sole victory came against a Hibernian side reduced to nine men.

But from a Celtic perspective, there is something amusing about the timing.
