David Datro Fofana has outlined what he wants from his next club as Celtic’s interest in the Chelsea striker resurfaces, with the London side keen to offload him on a permanent deal this window.
The 22-year-old has never really landed at Stamford Bridge since arriving from Molde in 2022. Loans to Union Berlin, Burnley and Goztepe came and went without momentum. This season, at least, there is something tangible to point to.
Fofana is currently on-loan at Turkish Super Lig side Fatih Karagümrük and has scored seven goals in 14 matches. It is the sort of return that reminds clubs why Chelsea paid for him in the first place and why others are again circling.
Chelsea are now keen to move him on permanently. Part of that is financial, while part is administrative, with the club looking to free up an international loan slot. Either way, his name is back in the mix.
Celtic know him well. Interest was sparked in the dying hours of the summer window after a move for Kasper Dolberg came and went in a flash. That scramble ended in frustration.
Fofana opted to stay in London, initially agreeing to a loan with Charlton before that deal fell apart. Within days, he was instead sent to Turkey. It was a messy window, and one that appears to have left a mark.
Fofana has made it clear he has taken lessons from that period. Asked how he is approaching the January transfer window amid interest from multiple clubs, he said (Daily Record):
“With calm and maturity. I’ve learned that football moves fast, but your focus must stay stable. My priority is to perform, help my team, and let football speak.”
That is not the language of a player desperate for any move. It is someone looking for stability after being shunted from place to place.
Celtic and Derby County are both said to be monitoring his situation. Fofana was clear about what would convince him to commit next.
“I want a project where trust, playing time, and ambition align. That’s where a player can truly express himself and grow.
“That I can be consistent, focused, and impactful over time. I know my journey hasn’t been simple, but I believe it has prepared me to be stronger now. I’m not trying to erase the past. I’m building from it.”
For Celtic, the appeal for Fofana’s signature has been reignited. The 23-year-old is finally scoring with regularity. The concern is just as clear; he has yet to settle anywhere for long.
If Celtic do move again, this time it would need to be more than a late-window punt. Fofana is looking for belief and minutes. If the club cannot offer both, he will not be short of alternatives.
