Opinion: Efraín Juárez’s Managerial Success Makes Celtic Link Intriguing

Efraín Juárez is not just a former Celtic player being linked with a sentimental return to Glasgow.

The Mexican has already started to build an interesting coaching career, and that is what makes the latest report around him so intriguing.

A report from Mexico has claimed Juárez has been in talks over a possible return to Celtic, initially as part of Martin O’Neill’s coaching staff, with the possibility of becoming manager further down the line.

That is a bold claim, and one that should be treated carefully until there is confirmation elsewhere.

But it is worth looking at what Juárez has done since moving into coaching.

After retiring as a player, Juárez worked as part of Ronny Deila’s staff at New York City FC, where he was involved during a successful period for the MLS side. He later followed Deila to Europe, working at Standard Liège and Club Brugge.

His first major managerial opportunity came with Atlético Nacional in Colombia.

That spell was short, but highly successful on the pitch. Juárez won silverware and showed he could handle pressure, expectations and a demanding football environment.

He later returned to Mexico with Pumas, another big club with serious demands, before leaving after what was reported as a disagreement over the direction of the project.

That part matters.

Juárez appears to be a coach with strong ideas, and his recent career has not been without friction. Reports around his exits have pointed towards disagreements with boards or club structures.

At Celtic, that would be difficult to avoid.

This is a club where recruitment, squad planning, football structure and board decision-making are already under constant scrutiny. Any coach coming into that environment needs to understand how complicated it can be.

That is where working under O’Neill could make sense.

For all the debate around what Celtic do next, there are few better people for Juárez to learn from than Martin O’Neill. Many supporters would regard O’Neill as Celtic’s greatest manager since Jock Stein, and his understanding of the club, the pressure and the demands of the job is unmatched in the modern era.

If Juárez was to come in as part of the coaching staff, he would not just be returning to an old club.

He would be learning the Celtic job from someone who knows exactly what it takes to survive and succeed in it.

Of course, what that would mean for Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham remains to be seen. Both played their part in last season’s success, and supporters are still waiting for clarity on their futures.

For now, the Juárez link is only a report.

But his coaching career is no longer just potential. He has worked in different countries, different football cultures and high-pressure environments.

The question is whether Celtic see him as part of a longer-term plan.

And if they do, learning under O’Neill would not be a bad place to start.
