Celtic have moved to keep hold of one of their younger players, with Hayden Borland signing a new contract that runs until 2029. The defender has been a regular for the B team this season and has worn the captain’s armband.
Borland has played consistently under Stephen McManus and Jonny Hayes, getting on the pitch most weeks in the Lowland League. That run of games has given him a solid base, which not every academy player gets at this stage.
He first signed a professional deal in 2024, and this extension comes after that progress. It reflects how often he’s been used and the trust placed in him at that level.
There is also some international experience. He has moved through Scotland’s youth levels and was involved in the under-19 qualifiers last month. That adds another part to his development.

The contract keeps him at the club, but what comes next is the real part of it. Playing in the Lowland League brings minutes, but it doesn’t always match what he would face at first-team level.
Celtic already have options in defence. Getting into that side means dealing with a quicker game and more pressure, especially when the team is pushed back and has to defend space.
That’s where the next step comes in. Loans in the Championship have started to give young players a different test, with stronger opponents and more physical games.
This deal gives Borland time to keep building. The next move will depend on where he plays and how close that takes him to the first team.
