Celtic begin the Wilfried Nancy era this afternoon, and the new manager has wasted no time putting his own stamp on the team. His first starting eleven gives a clear glimpse of the identity he wants to build, and supporters inside Celtic Park will spot the shift right away.
Nancy looks to have gone straight to his trusted three at the back. Kasper Schmeichel starts in goal with Kieran Tierney, Liam Scales, and Auston Trusty forming the defensive trio. It is a bold choice for a first game, although it fits the system he has leaned on throughout his coaching career.
Yang and Tonekti are expected to work the flanks and provide width in a shape Celtic fans have not seen in quite a while. The midfield keeps a familiar core with Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate, and Engels steps in to add balance and movement between the lines.
Up front, Nancy has paired Nygren with Daizen Maeda. It could be a straight two, or Nygren may sit a little deeper to link play and help lead the press. Either way, it is a clear shift from what Brendan Rodgers and interim manager Martin O’Neill have used.
It is bold. It is different. It already feels like Wilfried Nancy.
