Rangers were already hurting after their Scottish Cup exit to Celtic, then Dublin Airport came along with a line that will have supporters on the green side of Glasgow smiling.

After Sunday’s quarter-final at Ibrox ended goalless over 120 minutes, Celtic held their nerve in the shootout and won 4-2 on penalties to book their place in the last four. Rangers paid the price for misses from James Tavernier and Djeidi Gassama, while Celtic were perfect from the spot.

It was a brutal way for Rangers to go out, particularly after they had the better of much of the match. However, it was the Celtic fans celebrating again.

The two missed penalties by Rangers were very poor – Tavernier’s shot cannoned off the cross bar at pace and Gassama’s went very high and wide. It opened the door for ridicule.

Posting on X after the tie, Dublin Airport aimed a playful dig in the direction of Govan. The airport account wrote: “Our FOD team just recovered two ‘RFC’ footballs from beside our north runway, they landed just after 3.30pm and came in from Glasgow direction ⚽️ ⚽️”. The post was a clear reference to Rangers’ two missed penalties in the shootout.

Anyone who watched the shootout knew exactly what Dublin Airport was getting at. Two balls, Glasgow direction, Rangers beaten on penalties. Simple, sharp, and just enough mischief to get people sharing it.

It was another little moment to enjoy after a tense afternoon that was more about grit than glamour. This was not a flowing, free-scoring derby performance from Martin O’Neill’s side. It was a backs-to-the-wall display in many ways, followed by composure from 12 yards when everything was on the line.

Rangers come up short in the big moment once again, and the joke practically wrote itself. Celtic were through, Rangers were out, and even an airport in Ireland could not resist twisting the knife.

There will be bigger talking points from the game itself over the coming days, but as bits of post-match banter go, this was excellent.
