Celtic may have been handed an opportunity to revisit one of their long-term transfer targets.
Jakob Breum has once again found himself linked with a move to Glasgow this summer and developments in the Netherlands suggest the door could be opening for interested clubs.
The winger has entered the final 12 months of his contract and, crucially, has no intention of signing a new deal with his current club.
That admission has come directly from the top.
Discussing Breum’s situation, the club’s technical director Marc van Hintum told the Glasgow Times:
“Jakob is only under contract for another year and does not want to sign an extension.
“That means he is allowed to leave if a good offer comes in, but so far that has not happened.
“There is nothing concrete happening yet.”
Those comments are significant.
Not only do they confirm Breum’s contract situation, they also make it clear that his club are open to a sale if their valuation is met.
The Danish attacker was heavily linked with a move to Parkhead last summer, with the club believed to have explored a deal before talks failed to progress.
At the time, Paul Tisdale was overseeing football operations and reports suggested Celtic’s valuation fell short of what was required to get a deal over the line.
A year on, the landscape looks different.
Tisdale has departed, Breum has just one year remaining on his contract and his club have publicly acknowledged he intends to leave.
That naturally makes him a player worth watching.
The 22-year-old enjoyed another productive season in the Eredivisie, recording six goals and six assists in 28 league appearances.
His European numbers were less eye-catching, contributing one assist in six Europa League matches, but his domestic form continued to underline why clubs remain interested.
The question now is whether Celtic are one of them.
Martin O’Neill’s squad is expected to undergo significant changes this summer.
Daizen Maeda continues to attract interest, while several attacking positions are expected to be strengthened regardless of departures.
Breum’s versatility and age profile would fit many of the recruitment characteristics Celtic have targeted in recent years.
What is clear is that supporters are becoming increasingly impatient for movement.
Pre-season training begins on Friday, yet Celtic have gone more than four weeks since lifting the Scottish Cup without making a signing or providing much communication on several key issues.
If Breum is still viewed as a target, circumstances may never be more favourable than they are now.
The player wants to leave and his club are willing to sell. The only question is whether Celtic are prepared to make their move.
