Celtic’s search for a long-term replacement for Kasper Schmeichel may have taken them to the Netherlands, with journalist Stephen McGowan reporting interest in Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Jari De Busser.
McGowan says the Dutch club are aware Celtic have been monitoring the Belgian keeper as the Hoops prepare for a huge summer rebuild.
The timing is understandable.
Schmeichel remains one of the most experienced figures in the squad, but Celtic know they cannot ignore long-term planning in goal much longer. Viljami Sinisalo impressed during spells this season, especially in the Scottish Cup Final against Dunfermline, though there is still uncertainty over who is the club’s permanent number one.
De Busser matches the type of signing Celtic have often looked for.
At 26, he already has strong senior experience while still offering room for development and future resale value. McGowan reports the goalkeeper is entering the final year of his contract, with Go Ahead Eagles thought to value him at roughly £2.5 million.
That would comfortably fit within Celtic’s normal spending range.
The Belgian also comes off the back of a demanding Eredivisie campaign. De Busser played every league match during the 2025/26 season, conceding 53 goals while keeping nine clean sheets in 34 appearances.
Those figures probably need a bit of context.
Go Ahead Eagles are not one of the dominant sides in the Netherlands, meaning De Busser regularly dealt with pressure and heavy shot volume rather than spending games behind a defence controlling possession constantly. Celtic’s recruitment team have often looked closely at goalkeepers capable of coping during difficult spells rather than simply collecting clean sheets in stronger teams.
His reputation also rose after helping Go Ahead Eagles lift the KNVB Cup last season.
The main question is where he would fit immediately if Celtic moved forward with interest.
Sinisalo finished the season well and remains highly regarded internally. However, much could depend on whether Celtic want immediate competition for the starting spot or a goalkeeper who can gradually grow into the role over time.
