Alistair Johnston Exits World Cup As Future Questions Emerge

Alistair Johnston’s World Cup campaign is over after Canada were beaten by Morocco in the last 16.

The Celtic right-back started for his country as Canada looked to continue what had already been a historic tournament, but Morocco proved too strong after the break and ran out 3-0 winners.

Canada had managed to keep the game level at half-time, giving themselves a platform to try and cause another upset. But Morocco stepped things up in the second half, with Azzedine Ounahi scoring twice before Soufiane Rahimi added a third late on.

For Johnston, it brings an end to a memorable few weeks on the world stage.

The Celtic defender was an important figure for Canada throughout the tournament and played a major part in their run beyond the group stage. His energy, aggression and willingness to get forward were all on show, and he looked comfortable in a side that asked a lot from its wide players.

Canada will be disappointed with the way the Morocco game got away from them, but their overall campaign still deserves credit. They reached the knockout rounds, won matches, and showed they could compete at a level that once looked beyond them.

Johnston should come away from the tournament with his reputation strengthened. He was not just there as part of the squad. He was involved, trusted and used in big matches.

That profile has already led to transfer talk. Fulham have been linked with Johnston during the tournament, with reports claiming the Premier League side made contact with his representatives after his performances for Canada. Celtic remain in a strong position, though, with Johnston tied down on a long-term deal until 2029.

For Celtic, that can only be seen as a positive. Johnston has already proved himself at club level, but doing it for Canada at a World Cup will only add to his standing.

The only concern now will be recovery. After a demanding tournament, Celtic will need to manage his return carefully before he links back up with Martin O’Neill’s squad.

There is always frustration when a player exits a major tournament, especially at the knockout stage, but Johnston can look back on his World Cup with pride.
